We asked MAKE illustrator Damien Scogin to create some drawings so that folks could better understand the functioning of the basic robot plant design we're using in the Micochip/Energizer Make It Last Build Series, Project #2: The Robot Plant. As we've said, you don't have to make yours this way, this is just one idea, the one we're using in our build. We've already gotten some cool designs submitted to the MAKE Flickr pool. We're giving special prize bundles to the first five people who upload their robo-plant designs to the pool (tag them "robotplant"). We still have a couple of packages to give away. See issue #2 of the Robot Plant Project Newsletter for more details on this little "Plant Design Challenge" and see the Make It Last landing page for full details of the build series and the contest. Prizes for the winning robo-plants include a $200 gift card and copies of Make: Electronics.

If you're not signed up for the project mailing list, you can sign up here. It'll sign you up for this project/contest and similar future mailings. The next newsletter and blog post, covering construction of the flower and touch-sensing, will go out tomorrow.

Team Use Stem Cells to Restore Mobility in Paralyzed Monkey

Posted: 08 Dec 2010 02:21 PM PST

interval1066 writes "From the article: 'Japanese researchers said Wednesday they had used stem cells to restore partial mobility in a small monkey that had been paralysed from the neck down by a spinal injury.' This is huge news in the world of stem cell research; restoring some muscular control to a simian is a huge step. This means that stem cell therapy is a demonstrably viable path to restoring motility for millions of accident victims, palsy and ms sufferers, the list just goes on."

Pioneer's Discussion Table is the Surface competitor your business can't live without
We'd all like our tables to be a little smarter, and anyone who works for a company would surely like their meetings to have a bit more intelligence, too. Pioneer is hoping to kill two birds with one rather sizeable piece of furniture: the Discussion Table, due sometime next year. Interestingly it's simply a Core i7-based PC running Windows Embedded Standard 7, with minimal custom coding on top of that. Users can bring their mobile PCs nearby and share documents to the table or remote desktop right into their machines from it, showing their docs and displays in scalable and rotatable windows. The Windows underpinnings handles the multitouch details, also offering what must surely be the biggest virtual keyboard ever seen in the wild. The Table has a single-sheet scanner built in the side and even offers TransferJet, so that everyone can download pictures of Boss's drunken holiday party antics wirelessly.
