Disarm Internet Trolls, Gently

Posted: 06 Mar 2011 02:01 PM PST

Shlomi Fish writes "The best way to react to people trolling on Internet forums is not to feed them, right? Wrong! 'Don't feed the trolls' is also usually ineffective. Luckily, however, there is more effective approach, inspired by the book Feeling Good by David D. Burns."

Of those who started Heavy Rain, 72 percent finished it, according to the president of the studio behind the game. That's a rather striking number for any video game, especially compared to another major hit released about the same time. More »

J.D. Power Gives Top Marks to Verizon for Nationwide Call Quality [Blip]

Posted: 06 Mar 2011 02:00 PM PST

Kudos to Verizon for snagging the coveted J.D. Power award for best call quality. The award confirms what many former AT&T customers have probably known for some time now. J.D. Power's testing was done between July and December and found Verizon to have the best/tied for the best scores in categories like customer satisfaction, dropped calls, texting quality and voice call echoes, to name a few. In other unsurprising news for today, in this same story we learned T-Mobile consistently ranks below average for call quality, nationwide. [Electronista] More »

Plug In Launcher for Android makes things happen when you connect USB or headphones

Posted: 06 Mar 2011 01:06 PM PST

Plug In Launcher is a free Android app that does just one thing, and it does it well -- it launches any app of your choice when it detects power or a connected pair of headphones. In fact, it can pair one app to your phone's 3.5mm headphone jack and another to your USB port, letting it launch, say, a music player when you plug in headphones, and perhaps an alarm clock while you're charging it overnight, saving you a button press (note: the "Would you like to launch" message is optional) each time. All it asks in return is a pair of running processes that eat up 5.7MB of memory (as of this writing) and the ability to restart itself when you reset your phone. Sure, the app's a little limited compared to context-aware suites like Locale or Nokia Situations, but free is free, and this one's useful.

Turkey Bans Google's Blogger Over Soccer Piracy

Posted: 06 Mar 2011 01:02 PM PST

An anonymous reader writes "A local court has banned Google's Blogger service in Turkey in response to a complaint by satellite TV firm Digiturk that streaming media feeds from local soccer games were appearing on multiple Blogger profiles. Unsurprisingly, Google criticized the move, given that everyone is suffering over a few people's illegal actions. Copyright holders should target the individuals that are distributing the infringing content via an established complaints procedure rather than having the parent site banned. An estimated 600,000 Turks use the service to blog about anything from daily ramblings, to hobbies, to keeping their readers updated with the news."
