Speedtest.net overhauled with new look, new features

speedtest
Speedtest.net is pretty much the go-to site for quickly figuring out how fast (or slow) your connection really is and comparing the numbers your ISP boasts with what it actually delivers. And now it's got a new coat of paint and a couple of neat features. In brief:
  • New UI: The map widget is much improved; it actually looks like a map now, and it's easy to see where you are.
  • Smart server selection: If there are several test servers nearby, Speedtest will now ping each to see which has the least latency and use that for the test. You can still specify servers manually, too.
  • User accounts: You can sign up for a free account and aggregate results from several computers/connections.
  • Speed Wave: This new feature lets you add your test results to the results of many other users, and get a nice composite view.
All in all, you get some nice, new functionality and a snazzier interface to boot. Nice!

3D Printers Create Edible Objects

Posted: 07 Mar 2011 03:15 PM PST

MrShaggy writes "An engineering lab and a culinary school have teamed up to construct novel edible objects with 3D printers that use pureed foods in place of ink. From the article: '"It lets you do complex geometries with food that you could never do by hand," said Jeffrey Lipton, a researcher and graduate student at the lab. "So far, we've printed everything from chocolate, cheese and hummus to scallops, turkey, and celery," Lipton told CBC Radio's Spark in an interview that aired Sunday.'"

UK Schools Consider Searching Pupils' Smartphones

Posted: 07 Mar 2011 03:09 PM PST

An anonymous reader writes "What right to privacy do school pupils have on their mobile phones? UK education officials are considering ways to clamp down on cyber-bullying and classroom disruption by allowing teachers to search and delete content from student handsets if it is deemed unsuitable. However, questions remain whether such a move would give teachers too much power and infringe on student rights."

Amazon's Android App Store DRM Policy Isn't So Crazy After All [Blip]

Posted: 07 Mar 2011 03:05 PM PST

Despite some worrisome earlier reports, Amazon has clarified the DRM policies for their forthcoming Android App Store and they're actually not that crazy at all. Whereas it was initially thought that Amazon App Store-downloaded apps would need to check in with the mothership every time they were launched (thus raising questions about what would happen when phones didn't have a data connection), Amazon says that they'll only check-in online the first time the app is downloaded. Furthermore, developers will have to opt-in to Amazon's DRM protection in the first place. Basically, just don't worry about it. [Phandroid] More »
