| This Robber's Worst Enemy Is His Own Ski Mask [Video] Posted: 09 Mar 2011 03:00 PM PST As much as we've evolved as a species, why does it so often feel like we haven't taken petty criminals along for the ride? Case in unfortunate point: this gentleman, whose plan to rob a convenience store was wholly undone by his inability to put on a mask while a surveillance camera stared and stared and laughed and stared. Next time maybe give it a trial run in the parking lot? [The Daily What] More » |
| Kinect For Home Automation Makes a Lot Of Sense [Video] Posted: 09 Mar 2011 02:54 PM PST Using Kinect to detect where you are in a room so that your home automation can turn off the lights in the parts where you are not makes a lot of sense. Regular motion cameras can do this now, but Kinect can do this better, since it knows what constitutes a "person" and can adjust accordingly so you're not sitting in the dark for no good reason. | What If Lag Seeped Into Real Life? [Video] Posted: 09 Mar 2011 02:40 PM PST Nothing makes a video game experience quite so annoying as latency. But what if that lag seeped into your everyday life? Well, this—a hilarious animated short from Guy Collins of "The Scrollwheel" fame. Honestly, this is how I feel pretty much every morning until my second (third?) cup of coffee. | Town Expands To Boost Cooling For NSA Data Center Posted: 09 Mar 2011 02:35 PM PST 1sockchuck writes "A substantial water supply is critical for most large data centers. A case in point: Officials in Bluffdale, Utah have agreed to annex land housing a new $1.2 billion data center for the National Security Agency. The move makes the NSA a higher priority customer for Bluffdale's water utility, which prevents its water supply from a potential cutoff in the event of a water shortage — which would be a problem, since water will be used extensively in the data center's cooling system. Many large data centers have been working to reduce their water use to make them more sustainable and reliable." Read more of this story at Slashdot. |
| What Are the Worst Asshole Design Moves? [Qotd] Posted: 09 Mar 2011 02:20 PM PST Astute Redditor radmin noticed this particularly glaring bit of fuck you industrial design. Putting the escape and power buttons so close together seems akin to placing a seat recline and cockpit eject button adjacently. So! This is pretty bad—but have you noticed worst? Any horrible designs in your life that irk you? Snap a pic and drop a link in the comments—we love good design but we HULK RAGE HATE bad design. [via Reddit] More » |
| You're Being Tracked and No Law Is Going to Change That [Rant] Posted: 09 Mar 2011 02:17 PM PST On May 25, some European governments will activate laws against automatic web cookies. This means that web sites will have to explicitly ask for user permission every time they want to store any information in your browser. Some people are asking for this in the US too, in the name of privacy. More » |

| BattlePaint is an addictive geometric shooter game Posted: 09 Mar 2011 02:00 PM PST In BattlePaint, you play a cube. In fact, you're not even a cube -- just a square. But boy, are you fast! And you can shoot in all directions. That's important, because there are baddies coming in from all over the place. The "baddies" are swarms of other squares, in all sorts of pretty colors. They track you all over the screen, and you run around very quickly and just shoot, shoot, and shoot some more. If that doesn't sound very emotionally deep, it's because it isn't. But it's fun! After you shoot a baddy, it splashes paint as it disappears. You need to skate across this blob of paint and "eat it up" to get points. This game is fast. It clocked in at around 60-70 FPS on my system, and was loads of fun to play. It does tend to insult you when you die, though, but don't be offended -- I don't think it's personal. | Nokia E6 spied again, shows off its touchy Symbian UI Posted: 09 Mar 2011 01:51 PM PST We saw the Nokia E6 first leak a little over a month ago, suggesting that Nokia had plans to add a touchscreen into the portrait QWERTY formula pulled off so well in the E71... but there was a problem: the screen was off. Where's the fun in that? Now another shot of the apparently upcoming Symbian device has leaked -- this time in a darker shade -- showing an updated user interface with icons that look just big enough to comfortably fat-finger. That's all we've got for the moment, but for E71 owners still waiting for their knight in shining armor to swoop in and offer a worthy replacement, this might end up being the closest thing -- assuming, of course, it hasn't been canceled and you're still okay going with Symbian for your next phone.
