| MAKE 23: How to shoot mosquitoes with lasers Posted: 09 Sep 2010 04:00 PM PDT Huge problem: Malaria kills millions, but you can't just spray DDT anymore to wipe out disease-carrying mosquitoes (DDT also wipes out, oh, majestic bald eagles). What do do? You could search for another toxin to spray. Or, if you're 3ric Johanson at Intellectual Ventures Laboratory, you could invent a new gadget. A gadget that tracks mosquitoes and blasts them out of the air with lasers. IVL's Photonic Fence is audacious making, and only MAKE Volume 23 shows you exactly how they did it. In "Beam Weapon for Bad Bugs," Johanson takes you inside IVL and explains their technology and how his team solved four key problems to make it work: spot the bugs, target 'em, identify 'em (only females mosquitos bite -- you knew that), and then blast 'em in milliseconds. Along the way you'll learn about computer vision software, mirror galvanometers, mosquito wing-beat frequency, and how to make what can't be made, when you want to do what can't be done.

| Apple features first wave of Game Center-enabled games in App Store Posted: 09 Sep 2010 03:30 PM PDT Filed under: Games, Apple, iPhone In case you're having trouble finding games to play on Apple's new Game Center, the App Store has your back. Apple added a new featured section for Game Center games, where you can see which apps are leading the pack in adding Game Center support. There are some old classics like Flight Control (highly recommended at only 99 cents) and Real Racing, plus tower defense bestseller Fieldrunners and pretty puzzler Zen Bound 2.Of course, Zynga's FarmVille for iPhone is in this first group, and it's one of the first apps we've seen that needs the multiplayer capabilities to function properly. While the quality of these first games is high, selection is still very limited, and there's no sign of Project Sword or the Game Center-enabled Angry Birds that we saw in Steve Jobs' iOS 4.1 unveiling. Leaderboards and achievements are cool, but I personally can't wait for real-time multiplayer battles! | EMSL Egg-Bot kit drops this month Posted: 09 Sep 2010 03:00 PM PDT I'm generally not much of a kit-buyer, but it seems like each one Windell and Lenore release is better than the last. They almost had me with the Bulbdial clock; I will probably not be able to resist the new Egg-Bot kit. They're taking preorders now, and the first kits are supposed to ship at the end of this month. Looks like new orders are already backed up into October. More:

| Google Maps for Android gets GPS navigation for walking routes Posted: 09 Sep 2010 03:00 PM PDT Filed under: Utilities, Google, Mobile, Android This navigation mode isn't just a copy of driving mode, either. It's got pedestrian-friendly features like vibrating when you need to make a turn, and a map that turns as you do. Walking navigation also uses satellite imagery by default, to give you a better idea of where you are. You can also use the Street View smart navigation feature in the Google Maps search bar to decide which way to walk. This is a fantastic idea, although I'm sure there are still some kinks to work out. If you've got an Android device, we suggest you, well ... waaaalk this waaay! | Olympus E-5 leaks point to September 15th launch, familiar design Posted: 09 Sep 2010 02:41 PM PDT We've already heard a few rumors about Olympus's supposed E-3 successor, the E-5, and the folks at 4/3 Rumors have now turned up another pair of leaks ahead of the DSLR's expected launch later this month. That includes a teaser that seemingly confirms that the camera will be announced on September 15th (just a day off the earlier rumor), and what appears to be the first image of the camera itself -- or a tiny corner of it, anyway. Those both suggest that the camera will sport a strikingly similar design to the E-3 it's replacing (something backed up by 4/3 Rumors' "trusted sources"), and the camera's specs also seem to be in line with what we've heard before -- including a bump from ten to twelve megapixels, and new 720p/30fps recording mode. | The Quick Tabs Extension Enables Keyboard Navigation for Your Tabs Posted: 09 Sep 2010 02:30 PM PDT
It’s inspired by the search and switch functionality in many programming editors, and it really works well. Hit the Ctrl+M shortcut key, which is configurable in the settings, and then start typing. Hit enter to flip to the tab you want. Note that you’ll need to restart all your Chrome tabs before it’ll work. Thanks to @cbeust for pointing this one out. Quick Tabs [Google Chrome Extensions] |
