We love John Park, we really do, but as David Letterman likes to say: "That boy ain't hooked up right." Or, at least he wasn't until he came up with this ingenious little button for triggering his camera while doing project photography for our Dremel Around the Maker Workshop series. He writes:

I pulled apart an old phone headset to reuse the 2.5mm plug and wire to build my remote camera trigger. I plugged it into my Canon's remote jack, then determined which wire to short for the shutter release. I shoot in manual focus, so I ignored the wire that triggers auto focus. The switch is an arcade button and seems to be immune to saliva. Bonus!

May we say: Ew... (And, nice little hack, John Boy!)

Social browsing with Mozilla Labs F1 -- how RockMelt should've been

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 03:00 PM PST

Mozilla Labs F1 - social sharing in the browser
Mozilla Labs has just let loose the next stage in browser empowerment: F1. In one fell swoop, with just a single add-on, F1 brings social sharing to Firefox. With F1 installed, it's just a matter of clicks to share a site with Twitter, Facebook or Gmail.

The F1 button, which works in Firefox 3.6 and 4.0, sits in the top right corner of your browser, next to the search bar. The first time you use it, you need to authorize any (or all) of the three services. After that, you simply hit the F1 button, select a sharing service, and hit share. In case you were wondering, hitting F1 on the keyboard doesn't work -- that still brings up the Firefox help pages, alas. There's a video of it in action after the break.

It's painfully simple and stunningly effective. Sharing services like AddToAny and ShareThis have been deprecated by a 35 kilobyte Firefox add-on. F1 is faster, more convenient and unfailingly secure -- and this is just the beginning! While it only supports Facebook, Twitter and Gmail for now, Mozilla Labs talks about an API that will allow social sites to hook into Firefox; in theory, F1 could support any and all sharing services, all from within the browser.

This is the beginning of the end for the 'Share' block that hunkers like a hairy, unkempt baboon beneath each and every blog post on the Web. It really makes you wonder what exactly RockMelt spent 10 million dollars and two years of development on. F1 was probably developed in less than a week by a couple of Mozilla Labs code foxes.

Gold Nanoparticles Turn Trees Into Streetlights

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 02:35 PM PST

An anonymous reader writes "Street lights are an important part of our urban infrastructure — they light our way home and make the roads safe at night. But what if we could create natural street lights that don't need electricity to power them? A group of scientists in Taiwan recently discovered that placing gold nanoparticles within the leaves of trees, causes them to give off a luminous reddish glow. The idea of using trees to replace street lights is an ingenious one – not only would it save on electricity costs and cut CO2 emissions, but it could also greatly reduce light pollution in major cities."

Skyfire claims over 300,000 downloads in its first weekend

Posted: 10 Nov 2010 02:30 PM PST

Last week, we reported that the Skyfire browser had topped the iPhone sales charts and been pulled from the App Store because the high demand was overwhelming Skyfire's video transcoding servers. Now we know how many downloads it took to do that: over 300,000. That's the official report from Skyfire for the first weekend's download totals. As Neowin points out, at 3 bucks per sale, that's over $1 million (before Apple takes its 30% cut, anyway).

The huge number of downloads has forced Skyfire to make its browser available in limited batches, so its server capacity and bandwidth can keep up with the demand. You can argue about whether this proves users want Flash or not, but it definitely proves they want video content that's not currently available in iPhone-friendly formats. Skyfire is reaping profits from that demand, certainly, but that's no reason for Apple to start supporting Flash video on the iPhone -- why would it, when it can let Skyfire do all the work and still make money on the deal?
